One thing Iāve learned from having multiple horses is that feeding and horse care are definitely not one-size-fits-all. Every horse has different needs depending on their age, workload, metabolism, body condition, and overall health.
I try to keep my feeding program pretty simple. Iād rather have a few products that I actually have a reason for using than a feed room packed full of supplements just because they sound good.
Iām also certified in Equine Nutrition, so nutrition is something I genuinely enjoy learning about. I like knowing why Iām feeding something and paying attention to how my horses respond.
š¾ Feeds I Like
Two feeds I really like for certain horses are Nutrena SafeChoice All Life Stages and Nutrena SafeChoice Senior.
I think both are really nice options depending on the horse. Not every horse needs the same feed, so I like having different options available based on age, workload, and nutritional needs.
For my personal barrel horse, Ruby, my favorite is Buckeye EQ8 Performance.
Ruby gets a 50/50 mix of Nutrena SafeChoice All Life Stages and Buckeye EQ8 Performance.
Because Ruby is my barrel horse and stays in regular work, I pay close attention to her body condition, muscle, energy, workload, and overall performance. I really like how she does on this combination.
That doesn’t mean every barrel horse needs this exact feeding program. I think it’s much more important to look at the individual horse than copy someone else’s feed bucket.
š„ Supplements I Use
I’m a BIG believer in keeping supplements simple.
One of my favorites for Ruby is Finish Line Performance Builder. I use it as part of her overall nutrition program while she’s in work and competing.
I also use Finish Line electrolytes, especially because living in Arizona means dealing with some seriously hot summers. Keeping my horses properly hydrated and replacing electrolytes lost through sweat is something I take seriously.
Another product I really like is RepleniMash, and this is something all of my horses get. I like using it as part of their routine for electrolyte and gut support, especially through the hotter months.
š Finish Line
I actually really like Finish Line’s entire supplement line.
I don’t currently have every Finish Line product in my lineup, but the ones I do use have earned their place. One of the things I like about the line is that the products feel clean and straightforward, which fits really well with how I like to approach my horses’ nutrition.
There are definitely more Finish Line products I’d like to try in the futureāI just don’t believe in putting a horse on every supplement available simply because you can.
Iād rather choose what actually makes sense for that horse.
š§“ Other Things Iāll Be Sharing
I want this to be more than just a list of things in my feed room. Iāll also be sharing some of my favorite:
- Electrolytes
- Gut-support products
- Performance-horse products
- Senior-horse products
- Treats
- Grooming products
- Recovery products
- Horse-care essentials
- DIY recipes
- Things I keep in my barn and trailer
I’ll explain what I use them for, which horses I use them on, and why I like them.
š¤ Why I Keep Things Simple
My basic philosophy is:
Good forage + appropriate feed + clean water + proper care + only the supplements that actually have a purpose.
I pay close attention to my horses’ body condition, workload, muscle, energy, appetite, and overall appearance. If something changes, I want to notice it.
I don’t expect a supplement to fix everything. A good nutritional foundation comes first.
And what works for my 8 year old barrel horse might not work for my 40 year old pony. That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned about horses you have to feed the horse in front of you.
š My Equine Favorites
I’ll be putting my favorite feeds, supplements, and horse-care products on my Chewy storefront so you can see the things I personally use and like.
I’ll keep adding to it as I find products that genuinely earn a spot in my feed room, tack room, or trailer.
At the end of the day, my goal is pretty simple:
Keep it clean. Keep it simple. Pay attention to the horse. And use things for a reason. š¤š“
Everything I share is based on my personal experience with my own horses and isn’t intended to replace individualized veterinary or equine nutrition advice. Every horse has different nutritional needs, and feed or supplement changes should be made appropriately and gradually.
