One of my favorite homemade horse-care recipes is what I call my Unicorn Poultice! 🦄🤎
I came up with this combination because I wanted a simple clay-based recipe that I could make at home with ingredients I like using in my horses’ care. It has a thick, creamy texture and is easy to spread over the area I’m working with.
🌿 What’s In It?
Kaolin Clay — The main base of the poultice. It gives the mixture a smooth texture and helps it stay where you apply it.
Bentonite Clay — Adds thickness and absorbency to the clay mixture and helps create that classic poultice consistency.
Aloe Vera — Helps make the poultice smoother and easier to spread while adding a soothing, moisturizing component.
Turmeric — A bright yellow botanical ingredient containing curcumin. I like adding it for its antioxidant properties and as part of the overall botanical blend.
Peppermint Essential Oil — Adds a fresh, minty scent and a cooling sensation.
Myrrh Essential Oil — Adds an earthy scent and has traditionally been used in topical botanical preparations.
Copaiba Essential Oil — Adds a mild, woody scent and is commonly included in botanical topical blends.
Water — Helps hydrate the clays and lets me adjust the poultice to whatever consistency I want.
🦄 Why “Unicorn”?
Honestly… because look at the ingredients! Between the bright yellow turmeric, creamy clay, aloe, and all the different botanicals, it feels like something that belongs in a magical little horse-care potion.
And yes, turmeric WILL turn everything yellow, so don’t wear your favorite clothes while making it. Ask me how I know.
🤎 My Favorite Part
I love that this is something I can make myself and customize depending on the consistency I need. It’s become one of those DIY recipes I like keeping around in my horse-care supplies.
Important: This is my personal DIY recipe, not a veterinary treatment. I don’t use it on open wounds, broken skin, eyes, or irritated areas. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so I use them sparingly and always patch-test first. If my horse has significant swelling, heat, pain, lameness, or an injury, I involve my veterinarian rather than relying on a homemade poultice.
Unicorn Poultice🦄 because horse care can be practical AND a little magical.
